Extract:

“Tell me something crazy about you,” Grace said.

“I have a dog,” Alec replied.

She lowered her eyebrows. “Okay. I guess that’s crazy, since I doubt you’re hardly ever home.”

“True. She stays with my parents. She really adores my mom.”

“What kind of dog is she?”

“A golden lab.”

“What’s her name?”

“Grace.”

She released a bark of laughter. “You’re full of it.”

“No, it’s true. Her name is Grace Kelly. I could introduce you one day. I think she’d like you—kindred spirits and all that.”

She couldn’t shake the smile from her lips as she turned her gaze back to the ocean that shimmered under the crescent moon, pleased that Alec dangled a future between them.
And then she remembered that maybe he was saying nice things to get her in the sack, that maybe he had no intention of following through with such suggestions, that maybe, in the end, he’d be like Brad. The smile left her face.

“You’re overthinking it, Grace.”

“About what?”

“Us.”

Her eyes locked with his. “You’re awfully sure of yourself.”

“Around you? Hardly. But there is one thing I am sure of.”

“And what’s that?”

“I’m not going to let a chance with you go by.”

Ah, hell. It worked for her.
She held his gaze, letting him know that he had a free pass to first base.
He leaned forward and kissed her, his lips warm and inviting, his skin smelling of sweat and sunscreen. He scooted closer and kissed her again, and she slanted her mouth against his, sinking into the delicious sensations that had lived only in her daydreams until this moment.

She brought a hand to his cheek, her fingertips brushing along the stubble, and then slid it to the back of his neck. The kiss changed, deepening, as Alec pulled her into his arms.

When she surfaced for air, she thought to say something funny, but he’d literally knocked the wind from her. Like flash lightning, her body was on fire everywhere. She brought her mouth to his again and let loose the desire coursing through her. Lack of sex for well over a year apparently wasn’t good for a person, and she suddenly wanted to remedy that. With Alec.

#BlogTour: The Visitors by Catherine Burns @C_Burnzi @legend_press #TheVisitors

41H3cXwOZ5L

Book Synopsis:

Marion Zetland lives with her domineering older brother, John in a decaying Georgian townhouse on the edge of a northern seaside resort. A timid spinster in her fifties who still sleeps with teddy bears, Marion does her best to shut out the shocking secret that John keeps in the cellar.

Until, suddenly, John has a heart attack and Marion is forced to go down to the cellar herself and face the gruesome truth that her brother has kept hidden.

As questions are asked and secrets unravel, maybe John isn’t the only one with a dark side.

My Review:

The Visitors is an extremely dark, chilling and disturbing read.  It gets under your skin making the dark and any noises heard at night take on extra significance and creepiness!

I didn’t know what to make of the two main characters John and Marion.  They are definitely two very messed up, cruel individuals who seem to be aware that what they are doing isn’t right but don’t seem to care.  The fact that John is considered very clever and, as a doctor, a respectable member of society made my skin crawl as I wondered how many other similar people might have also been overlooked because of this.  Marion is another very interesting character. I did feel a little sorry for her at the beginning as I felt people judged her without really knowing her and the lack of love or support she got from her mother was heartbreaking to read about.  However the fact she just follows John blindly, believing his lies and continues to lie and cover for him after his death is very chilling.  It definitely made me uncertain or her and believe there was more to her then I initially thought.

The author cleverly makes the cellar a character in its own right as it’s oppressive, creepy presence is always there lurking in the background and effecting those around it.  Not much is disclosed as first about what could be down there so the reader’s imagination goes into overdrive imaging what the secret could be.  It definitely lead to some very creepy dreams!

The secret of the cellar is gradually revealed throughout the book and the tension is almost unbearable at times.  I simultaneously wanted to keep reading to discover what happens and stop as I wasn’t sure I wanted to know.  If I could have read from behind my fingers I think I would have.

This is Catherine’s debut novel and I definitely can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.  If you like dark, chilling thrillers with some very messed up characters you’ll love this book.

#BlogTour: Gracie’s Secret by Jill Child @bookouture @author_jill #GracesSecret #EmotionalThriller

jill-childs-1

Book Synopsis:

My dearest daughter, I will never forget the day I nearly lost you. The day you learned the secrets that would tear our lives apart…

Time stops for Jen when her beloved daughter, Gracie, is involved in a terrible car crash. Pronounced dead at the scene, it’s a miracle when paramedics manage to then resuscitate the little girl.

The relief Jen feels at Gracie’s recovery is matched only by her fury at the driver of the car – her ex-husband’s new girlfriend Ella. Jen has never trusted Ella, and now her worst fears have been confirmed.

But then Gracie begins to tell strange stories about what she heard in the car that day, and what she saw in those moments near death. It’s clear that there’s something shocking hidden in Ella’s past… but exposing it could tear all their lives apart.

An emotional page-turner that will take your breath away. Perfect for fans of Jodi Picoult, Lisa Wingate and Kerry Fisher.

Gracie’s Secret is out in ebook and paperback now, the e-book is currently only 99p.  You can purchase a copy of both here.

My Review:

This is a gripping and emotional read where everyone is hiding something.

The story is told from both Jennifer’s and Ellie’s point of view which helps make the book a lot more compelling.  My opinion on whose ‘side’ I was on changed constantly.  My favourite character was actually Ellie who I felt was quite misunderstood, especially by Jennifer.  As her story unfolds and we discover more about her history my like of her grew as I really felt for all she had been through. That’s not to say I didn’t feel for Jennifer.  Having your child in such a critical situation in hospital must be absolutely horrendous.  The pain and anguish she obviously felt was heartbreaking to read about and was almost tangible at times.  I can’t imagine how I would feel in such a situation.  However she came across as too perfect, or definitely thought herself to be, and everything was everyone else’s fault but hers which made it difficult to warm to her.

The mystery part of the book was very intriguing and definitely kept me on my toes.  I honestly wasn’t sure what was going on at times.  I found Gracie’s memories/ recollections had a slightly eerie feel to them I felt.  I couldn’t understand why Jennifer was so ready to dismiss them and felt Gracie’s frustration as she tried to get her mum to believe her.  At times I just wanted to reach in and give the little girl a huge hug.

The author very cleverly lulled me into a sense of false security with some of the characters.  She was very good at setting the scene and making the reader believe one thing when the opposite was true.  The twist at the end was brilliant and completely took me by surprise, I always love when that happens in a book.

This, amazingly, is Jill Child’s debut novel and I very much look to reading more from her in the future.

#BlogBlitz #Spotlight: A Dead American In Paris by Seth Lynch @SethALynch @fahrenheitpress @damppebbles #ADAIP #SalazarMysteries

Dead American In Paris cover

I’m thrilled to be on the blog tour for A Dead American In Paris and to be able to share my spotlight post with you.  Firstly huge thanks to the lovely Emma for letting me do a spotlight post instead of a review when due to a teething baby I was unable to read the book in time.  It sounds like a fantastic book though and I look forward to reading it soon.

A Dead American In Paris is available in ebook now and is currently only £1.99.  You can purchase a copy here.

Book Synopsis:

Arty Homebrook lived and died in a world of sleaze which stretched from Chicago to Paris but never beyond the gutter.

He’d been sleeping with Madame Fulton, which is why Harry Fulton promised to kill him. So far as the Paris Police are concerned it’s an open and shut case. Harry’s father has other ideas and hires Salazar to investigate.

As Salazar gets to grips with the case he’s dragged reluctantly into an unpleasant underworld of infidelity, blackmail, backstreet abortions and murder.

Salazar is far too inquisitive to walk away and far too stubborn to know what’s for the best. So he wakes up each hungover morning, blinks into the sunlight, and presses on until it’s his life on the line. Then he presses on some more, just for the hell of it.

“If you want a book which has fast paced action, plenty of snappy lines and transports you to another time then Salazar delivers.”

“Salazar is a fascinating character, with a wonderful wry and dry sense of humour.”

“One of the best novels I’ve read all year.”

#BlogTour: Love Will Tear Us Apart by Holly Seddon @hollyseddon @CorvusBooks @annecater #lovewilltearusapart #RandomThingsTours

FB_IMG_1529003374047

Book Synopsis:

Bestselling author, Holly Seddon, has delivered another page-turning and utterly enthralling novel.

Sometimes a promise becomes a prison.

Fearing eternal singledom, childhood friends Kate and Paul make the age-old vow that if they don’t find love by thirty, they will marry each other.

Years later, with the deadline of their 30th birthdays approaching, the unlikely couple decide to keep their teenage promise. After all, they are such good friends. Surely that’s enough to make a marriage?

Now, on the eve of their 10th wedding anniversary, they will discover that love between men and women is more complex, and more precarious, than they could ever have imagined. As Kate struggles with a secret that reaches far into their past, will the couple’s vow become the very thing that threatens their future?

Love Will Tear Us Apart is a moving and heart-breaking exploration of modern love and friendship, from the bestselling author of Try Not to Breathe.

Love Will Tear Us Apart is available in ebook, hardback and audiobook now.  You can purchase your copy here.

My Review:

This is a very powerful and entralling book that is a departure from Holly’s normal books as it isn’t a psycological thriller.

The story goes back and forth between 2012 and their ten year wedding anniversary and 1981 when the two of them first met. This gives the reader a great opportunity to really get to know the characters and to better understand their relationship.  The two of them are quite different to each other but, at the beginning at least, seem to compliment each other despite being from very different backgrounds.  I enjoyed reading about their friendship and watching it develop over the years.  Some of the stuff they got up in their youth made me feel quite nostalgic as I remember doing similar stuff as a kid.  There was also some great 80’s references in this part which helped add to the atmosphere.

I think what most hit me about this book was that the trouble Kate and Paul was experiencing are everyday problems or arguments that most couples have.  The tension in the book is created from this and makes the book seem a lot more real.  As their problems increase the tension between the pair gets worse and the book becomes more enthralling as you wonder what will happen.

I have to admit to being a little disappointed with the secret.  It was mentioned a lot throughout the book and I felt that the action was built up for the big reveal and it wasn’t as dramatic as I expected.  That said this didn’t spoil my overall enjoyment of the book as the story is very intriguing on its own.

I’ve read most of Holly Seddon’s books to date and I will definitely be reading more from her in the future.

Huge thanks to Anne Cater for inviting me onto the blog tour and to Corvus for my copy of this book.  If you like intriguing, power books with real characters I think you will enjoy this book.

A Mother’s Goodbye is available now in ebook and paperback, the ebook is currently only 99p.  You can purchase a copy of both here.

My  Review:

Oh my word I think this book broke me.  It’s been a while since I’ve cried so much at a book but I’m very glad I got the chance to read this one.

The story follows two women on both sides of the adoption journey.  Rachel is a mum of three whose fallen on hard times and when she falls pregnant again she knows they can’t afford to keep the baby.  Grace is a high flying career woman who desperately wants a child to stop the loneliness she feels after her father’s death.  It was great to be able to follow both woman’s story and to have access to all their thoughts and feelings, it really added to the story.  Both women feel so real and I felt like I went on a real journey with them over the course of the book.  I really felt for both of them as their emotions throughout the book was almost palpable at times and I wished I could reach out to them to give them a hug.

The writing in the book is just exquisite! I think it takes quite a skilled writer to make a reader care so much about the characters and feel so involved in the book.  The book is a fairly easy read and the plot is very gripping meaning it is quite difficult to put down.  I wanted to read on to find out what happens, as I felt so involved,  like the events were actually happening to me.

The ending was wonderful, bitter sweet but a good way to end the book.  I was definitely sobbing by the end of it. I do tend to avoid books involving children as being a mum I find them quite difficult to read.  This book was definitely a tear jearker and very emotional, which I struggled with at times but I pulled myself together to finish the book which I’m very glad I did.  This book will stay with me for a long time.

This is the first book by Kate Hewitt I have read but I’ll definitely be reading more from her in the future.

Huge thanks to Bookouture, Netgalley and Kim Nash for my copy of the book and for inviting me onto the blog tour.

#BookReview #GuestReviewer Kirsty Crichton: Eve Of Man by Giovanna & Tom Fletcher @purplekizz @TomFletcher @MrsGiFletcher @MichaelJBooks #EveofMan #YA

61vMgglPz0L._SY346_

Today I’m delighted to be handing over to Kirsty today for her review if Eve Of Man by Giovanna & Tom Fletcher.  I know Kirsty really enjoyed this one as she has mentioned as much once or twice 🙂

Eve Of Man is available to buy in ebook and hardback now, you can purchase a copy of both here.

Before I share Kirsty’s review here is a little about the book.

Book Synopsis:

This is the electrifying dystopian love story, the first in the trilogy by bestselling authors Giovanna and Tom Fletcher.

‘. . . ONE OF THE BIG BOOKS OF THE YEAR. YOU’D BE A FOOL TO MISS IT’ HEAT

______________

Eve is like any other teenage girl . . .

Except that the fate of the entire world lies on her shoulders.

She’s the first girl born in fifty years.

She’s the answer to their prayers.

She’s the final hope.

Which means she has one function alone . . .

At sixteen, Eve must face her destiny and make a choice.

She will choose a man, one out of three carefully selected suitors.

But what about Bram?

The future of the planet hangs on Eve making the rightchoice.

Will she?

COULD YOU CHOOSE BETWEEN LOVE, AND THE FUTURE OF THE HUMAN RACE?

Kirsty’s Review:

For the past 50 years only baby boys have been born, no one can explain it, then a unassuming couple at the end of their fertility unexpectedly fall pregnant to the long awaited girl. She is called Eve – the savior of humanity! Eve is now 16 and ready to fulfil her destiny but Eve is developing a mind of her own and is realizing that things may not be as they seem.

This is a really interesting book, classed as a YA dystopian novel but actually I think it is much more than that –‘with no future generation to inherit our world, we abused it beyond anyone’s imagining.’

It raises some really interesting moral and ethical dilemmas which personally I would have loved to have delved a little more into, had it been written for adults maybe they would have, but that didn’t detract in anyway from my enjoyment of this book.

The story is told from two viewpoints Eve and Bram, swapping regularly throughout. Bram is the son of the scientist that invented Eve’s ‘world’ as she knows it, an artificial dome (think Truman show) that is designed to keep her happy and compliant, as part of this they give her Holly, an artificial friend that is piloted by Bram. A chance encounter between them changes everything. I liked both characters, they were strong and willing to fight against unbelievable odds and difficult beginnings.

The action is fast paced and well written. I massively disliked the characters Vivian and Dr Isaac Wells, there was nothing there to warm me to them, which I think is the point, however, I would have liked to have read a little from their points of view, to see what their motivation was – there is also a big unanswered question for me concerning Vivian – hopefully this will be answered in future books.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I really hope I don’t have to wait too long for the next book in the trilogy! Big thank you to Penguin Random and House and Netgalley for giving me a copy to review.

#BlogTour: Mad by Chloé Esposito @ChloeJEsposito @BTUkatie @MichaelJBooks #Mad

cover.jpg.rendition.242.374

Book Synopsis:

What if you could take the life you’d always wanted?

Alvie has always been in the shadow of her glamorous sister Beth.

So when she’s invited to her identical twin’s luxurious Sicilian villa, Alvie accepts.

Who wouldn’t want seven days in the sun?

With Beth’s hot husband, the cute baby, the fast car and of course, the money.

The thing is it’s all too good to let go . . . and her sister Beth isn’t the golden girl she appears.

It’s Alvie’s chance to steal the life that she deserves.

If she can get away with it.

My Review:

Mad is definitely a book that lives up to its title, though whether it was referring to the main character or the plot I couldn’t tell you!

This book is fast paced and utterly addictive with the reader never sure what an earth would happen next.  It has everything you need from a book sex, drugs and murder as well as the opportunity to discover what it’s like living someone else’s life.  I think we’ve all wanted to do that at times.

Alvie is a very interesting main character.  I wasn’t sure I liked her to begin with.  She came across as very rude and uncaring of anyone else apart from herself.  She is definitely down on her luck but I couldn’t feel a lot of sympathy for her as she seemed such a prickly character.  My attitude towards her changed throughout the book as she starts her new assain like job. She starts to grow in confidence and is very good in her new role.  She seems happy which made me warm to her, she definitely seemed to have found her niche in life.

I loved the beautiful descriptions of Sicily.  They were very vivid and really made me able to imagine them, especially the gorgeous views.  I’ve always wanted to go to Italy and having read this book really want to make it a reality, though maybe I’ll wait until the kids are older so I can relax fully!

This is the author’s debut book and the first in an exciting new trilogy.  I’m very excited to read more and discover what happens next.

Huge thanks to Katie and Michael St Joseph publishers for my copy of this book and for inviting me onto the blog tour.

If you like hilarious, fast paced and, yep, mad books you’ll love this book.  It’s definitely a great book for the beach though I would recommend putting lots of sun cream on before reading as it’s very absorbing and therefore the risk of being burnt to a crisp is quite high!

#BlogTour: Her Mother’s Secret by Rosanna Ley @QuercusBooks @RosannaLey @annecater #HerMothersSecret #RandomThingsTours

FB_IMG_1528748540256

Book Synopsis:

Escape to the heart of enchanting Brittany with the bestselling author of The Villa and The Little Theatre by the Sea. The perfect treat for fans of Santa Montefiore and Veronica Henry.

For many years Colette has avoided returning to her homeland – the magical island of Belle-Île-en-Mer in Southern Brittany – afraid to confront the painful memories she left behind. She is living on the Cornish coast when she hears about her mother Thea’s failing health and realises that the time has come for her to go home. But can Colette ever forgive Thea for what she has done?

Despite Colette’s wariness, romantic Belle-Île still fascinates her. She takes on the running of her mother’s flower shop and makes friends with Élodie from the Old Lighthouse where Thea once worked as a nanny and with the enigmatic Étienne who shares Colette’s mixed feelings about the island. As Thea opens up to her for the first time, Colette finds herself softening and being drawn back into the landscape of her past. But can Belle-Île also be a part of her future?

The ghosts of that past still linger. What happened all those years ago and how did it cause the rift between mother and daughter? It becomes clear that the beauty of Belle-Île hides a devastating family secret – one that Colette is determined to unravel at any cost.

Her Mother’s Secret is available now in ebook and hardback.  It will be published in paperback on the 14th June.  You can purchase and pre-order your copy here.

My Review:

Her Mother’s Secret is a fantastically atmospheric, summery novel about hidden secrets and discovering yourself.

The descriptions of Belle-Île were wonderful and made me want to visit there immediately so I could visit all the places mentioned in the book for myself. The brightly coloured houses, the light house and the beautiful sea were very vividly described and I felt like I could really imagine the Island in my mind’s eye.  The lovely community feel of everyone knowing and looking out for each other helped give the book a cosy, warm feel that helps the reader relax into the story.

The story is told from the point of view of different Island inhabitants which helped add to the story and intrigue as it gives the reader a more holistic view of what happened.  I was very interested to find out how the different threads of the story would come together and if the awful events mentioned by the different characters were the same ones.

The reader is aware from the beginning that something dreadful happened on the Island a few years ago though not much is revealed immediately.  Instead the author cleverly builds up the reader’s knowledge of the characters and the Island, giving them the chance to make their own assumptions about what happened.  This gives the reader a chance to understand the characters and what makes them tick, which means you become more involved in the story and what happens.

The secrets of the Island are gradually revealed as the characters get to know one another and the Island.  I had a few ideas about what it could be but was only half right which made for a fantastic end to a fabulous book. The secret aspect of the book wasn’t what made the book for me however, it was the great descriptions of the Island and reading about the characters finding themselves and the gradual healing of their broken relationships which made this such a beautiful book.

Huge thanks to Quercus Publishers and Anne Cater for my copy of this book and for inviting me onto the blog tour.  This is definitely the perfect book to read in the sun this summer!

Book Synopsis:

‘Don’t you agree Detective? That some people deserve to die? I’ve killed the first. I’ve killed the second. Now will you catch the others, or do I have to kill them too?’

The body of Amos Price lies in a pool of blood on the polished floor of an otherwise empty house. With no signs of a break in, and no clues left at the scene, Detective Jenna Alton is at a loss.

But as the team begins to unpick the life of the reclusive victim, they discover a disturbing link between Amos and the disappearance of several young girls in the county going back years.

Days later, another brutally murdered body is found, in a remote motel on the outskirts of town. Ely Dorsey was killed in a frenzied attack and Jenna fears not only that the murders are connected to the missing girls, but that the killer hasn’t finished yet.

As Jenna tries to work out who will be next, the killer suddenly starts sending her deputy, David Kane, messages. Is she being taunted? Or does the murderer want to be caught? And will Jenna discover who’s behind these killings before more people die?

An absolutely nail-biting thriller with plenty of twists, Follow Me Home is perfect for fans of Robert Dugoni, Karin Slaughter and Rachel Abbott.

My Review:

Wow what an amazing book.  This book gripped me from the start with a dramatic and harrowing scene, which causes the reader to be thrown straight into the action.  It’s an incredibly fast paced book which helped keep me company during a sleepless night with a baby with bad reflux.  Though my baby was asleep for ages before I noticed as I was so engrossed in the story.

The police team and Detective Kane have a very close relationship which was great to read about.  They are a great team who clearly support and respect each other which was a refreshing change from the ultra competitive relationships you normally read about.

The book brought up an interesting dilemma for me as it was the first crime book I’ve read where I couldn’t feel sorry for the victim and actually felt they deserved what they got.  The victims are all very bad men who’ve done some awful stuff which as a mother made my skin crawl.  I actually found myself cheering for the murder as I felt they got what they deserved!

Follow Me Home is the third book in the series but can easily be read as a standalone as anything you need to know is mentioned in the book.

Huge thanks to Bookouture and Noelle for my copy of this book and for inviting me onto the blog tour. If you like fast paced, gripping thrillers you’ll love this book.
