#BlogTour: The Reckoning by Clár Ní Chonghaile @clarnic @Legend_Press

511x6zuo2FL

Book Synopsis:

‘A gorgeous, absorbing tale. The characters’ experiences of loss and their stoic sense of survival brought history to life in a way I had never seen it before… a compelling and captivating story, filled with adventure, love and regret’ Nicola Cassidy, author of December Girl

I have a story to tell you, Diane. It is my story and your story and the story of a century that remade the world. When we reach the end, you will be the ultimate arbiter of whether it was worth your time. You will also sit in judgment on me.

In a cottage in Normandy, Lina Rose is writing to the daughter she abandoned as a baby. Now a successful if enigmatic author, she is determined to trace her family’s history through the two world wars that shaped her life. But Lina can no longer bear to carry her secrets alone, and once the truth is out, can she ever be forgiven?

Chonghaile stuns in her second book for Legend Press weaving a complex narrative covering conflict, secrets, judgement and what it takes to sever family ties.

The Reckoning is available in ebook and paperback now, you can purchase your copy of both here.

My Review:

The Reckoning is a fascinating, poignant novel about the events of one woman’s life over the course of the twentieth century.  It describes everything she experience the good, the bad, things she regrets and those she is proud of.

There were lots of great historic events in this time period and the author does a great job of visiting each one.  I enjoyed reading about these events from Lina’s point of view as everyone has different experiences, especially during the two world wars.

I didn’t really warm to the main character Lina as I found her to be quite arrogant at times.  She’s also not very apologetic about any of the things she’s done, despite some of them have far reaching consequences.  I’m not sure I’d have been very happy if I was her daughter reading these letters.

This isn’t a fast paced book but nor should it be as that would take away from the beauty of the story.  Instead the reader provides an almost intimate narrative that makes the reader understand the character and their background really well so that they almost feel like friends.  This made the book a fantastic read for me.

This is the first book by this author I have read and I’d definitely like to read more from her.

Huge thanks to Lucy from Legend Press for my copy of this book and for inviting me on the blog tour.  If you like emotional historical fiction you’ll love this book.

The Golden Orphans offers a new twist on the literary thriller.

The Golden Orphans is an in ebook and paperback now, you can purchase your copy of both here.

My Review:

Golden Orphan’s is an atmospheric novel full of suspense and fabulous descriptions.  It’s a book that is hard to place in one genre as it’s part mystery, part thriller and a little bit of literary fiction in places.

I must admit that I didn’t know much about Cyprus’s history before reading this book so I found the descriptions about what happened very interesting to read about.  I always love it when books are based on real events as I enjoy being able to look them up and learn even more about them.

The author paints a very vivid picture of the country which made it very easy for me to picture the setting in my mind.  This is further added to by the descriptions of the laid back way of life in Cyprus. It seems like a beautiful, sunny country and I would definitely like to visit it at some point in the future.

The story is told my an unnamed narrator that helps add to the suspense as you don’t know whose point of view you are following.  This added an unusual twist to the story which made it more intriguing.

I thought this book was quite fast paced with lots of action and quite a few twists that definetly kept me guessing.  Just when I thought I had figured out what was happening the store went off in a completely new direction . The characters are all quite varied and interesting which made the story more enjoyable for me and ensured I wanted to keep reading to find out what happens to them.

Think is the first book by this author I have read and I’d definitely like to read more from him.

Huge thanks to Emma from Damp Pebbles Tours for inviting me onto the blog tour and for my copy of this book.

Madam Director

RE: Australis Incident

You will be wondering why an Operations Executive is contacting you directly rather than going through official channels. You may already be wondering what disciplinary action to take against me. I have thought long and hard about this, and believe me when I say that I would not be risking my career – my entire future – if I did not think that this was necessary. All I ask is that you suspend judgement until you have read this letter.

The staff at Tierra del Fuego became aware of problems at Australis when our regular contacts ceased shortly after the night shift began. As O’Higgins Base, our Antarctic port, was frozen, and because all Antarctic flying is suspended over winter, no action was taken until the following spring. Dr Gabriel (EUG/4454/555/13M), Technician Istevez (SAB2023/499/24M) and I myself were then dispatched to investigate. Our official report is on the system should you care to examine it. It is enough to say that the situation at Australis is stable, though I fear we will struggle to keep the lights on this year. The Company will also have lost many millions in profit.

Of immediate concern is the disturbing story we’ve managed to piece together surrounding the events of the long night. All survivors were given SP-117 by Dr Gabriel as per standard procedure; all then were interviewed individually and their statements recorded verbatim. The events they describe would be hard to credit had the witnesses not corroborated each other from their differing viewpoints. These accounts – in addition to the material evidence that has been recovered – have been retained in a secure server should you wish to examine them.

I have deliberately downplayed the significance of these reports so as to discourage curiosity. I have ordered Dr Gabriel to say nothing; I have checked his record and do not consider him a security risk, but you might wish him reassigned. He and Technician Istevez have remained at Australis for the time being, to help stabilise the situation.

The transcript I am attaching – that of Anders Nordvelt (EUE/6887/274/33M) – is fully representative, and I urge you to read it. I cannot – dare not – enlarge on Nordvelt’s narrative in this message; save to say that it suggests that the problems encountered in Antarctica may threaten other Company operations. Indeed, it might not be going too far to say that they may affect the very future of the Company.

I think once you have read the transcript you will understand the reasons for my direct approach. Had I employed the usual chain of communication my life would now be in serious danger.

I await your instructions

Ricardo Baurus
Operations Executive
SAB6974/243/21M

Chapter One:

We stood on the pack ice, struggling to keep our feet in a wind that drove the snow right into our faces. I shielded my eyes and watched Fischer and Weng crouching down by the still, suited figure to make certain of what we all knew; and the professional part of me sought for clues, evidence, footprints. It was hopeless. Our torches were powerful but the blizzard smothered all. I tried to find shelter in the lee of the building but the gale seemed to be coming from all around.

Fischer straightened and looked at me, her feet crunching on the freshly fallen snow. She didn’t speak, but even through her mask I could sense her anguish. Or maybe that was just my imagination, my own terrors reflected back at me.

We had good cause for fear. This assignment was rapidly becoming a nightmare.

Just a few days into the night shift and we had a death on our hands.

* * *

Should I go from there, or should I begin with my arrival?

* * *

There was no room in the driver’s compartment so I rode with the light goods. A small, hard seat and a small, cheap viewscreen were my comforts. I spent hours pacing the small, grey space, watching progress on the screen map. I tried to read, scrolling idly down the lists of titles on my datapad. I flicked from article to article, but nothing could hold my attention. I settled for switching the screen to show the outside world. It was just… grey. All grey and white and brown. Shapeless mounds drawn in nothing colours, and that was all I could see for miles and miles and miles in every direction.
My home. For at least the next six months this forgotten land was to be my home. I was to be the thirteenth man, a late replacement for the old security officer. I didn’t know why he had left: the Psych should have anticipated any problems.

Only twelve other people within a thousand miles. Well, I’d always felt alone, even when surrounded by thousands. Maybe that was why I’d been appointed.

The smelting plant was the first I saw of the complex. I watched as the giant factory slowly grew in the crawler viewscreen. I had studied the plans of the base, of course, but it was another thing entirely to watch that monster slowly becoming more solid, more gigantic, as we approached. The buildings clustered in its lee were to be my home; just those few small structures and, around them, Antarctica’s endless wastes.
“Ten minutes, Mr Nordvelt,” the driver called over the intercom. “Best get suited up.”

I was, I think, more practised than he knew. I had my Antarctic gear on and ready in half that time. My training had been thorough. I stood sweating in the airlock as I waited for the vehicle to come to a halt.

#BlogTour: The Insider by Mari Hannah @mariwriter @orionbooks @AlainnaGeorgiou #TheInsider #5Stars

513FJ4o6V8L

Good morning everyone, I’m so excited to be kicking off the tour for one of my favourite crime writers today!

The Insider is published in ebook and paperback on the 1st November but you can pre-order your copy of both here.

Before I share my review with you here is a little bit about the book.

Book Synopsis:

‘It was the news they had all been dreading, confirmation of a fourth victim.’

When the body of a young woman is found by a Northumberland railway line, it’s a baptism of fire for the Murder Investigation Team’s newest detective duo: DCI David Stone and DS Frankie Oliver.

The case is tough by anyone’s standards, but Stone is convinced that there’s a leak in his team – someone is giving the killer a head start on the investigation. Until he finds out who, Stone can only trust his partner.

But Frankie is struggling with her own past. And she isn’t the only one being driven by a personal vendetta. The killer is targeting these women for a reason. And his next target is close to home…

My Review:

I’m a huge fan of Mari Hannah and I have been eagerly awaiting the next book in the Stone and Oliver Series.  Hannah’s books are always fab reads so its always great to be able to relax into them knowing you’ll love them.

The story starts off straight away with a scary search for a murder victim in the dark and rain which immediate got my attention.  There is an eerie feel to the search which is compounded by the weather that made me feel something was going to happen.  That along with the knowledge they were searching for a murder victim and the murderer could still be out there ensured I was hooked from the start!

The partnership between Stone and Oliver is a very interesting one, which I really enjoyed reading about.  There seems to be a great mutual respect that exists between them and a growing understanding of what strengths each can bring to the case.  I thought it was great that Stone listened to Frankie and asked her opinion on things, despite him being the more senior officer.  I felt that showed him to be quite a considerate boss.

The author describes the beautiful Northumberland scenery really vividly so I felt that I could really see it in my mind.  The descriptions of the vivid, remote countryside, where most of the murders take place, helps to add a really eerie feel to the book.  This also adds to the tension as the reader gets the feeling that anything could happen at any time.

The story goes along at quite a fast pace with lots of action to keep the reader interested.  The idea that there is a leak in the force helps add to the atmosphere and kept me guessing as to who it would be.  There is a lot of great banter between the police officers that helps add some light relief to the story too and it was great to see the team bonding together.

The Insider is the second book in the Olive and Stone series and whilst it could be read as a standalone I think it would be better to read these books in order as you’d have a greater understanding of the characters.  I’m very excited to read more from Mari Hannah and look forward to the next book in this amazing series!

Huge thanks to Orion books for my copy of this book via Netgalley and to Alianna for inviting me onto the blog tour.  If you like dark, thrilling crime books you’ll love this book!

#BlogTour: Reprobation by Catherine Fearns @rararesources @metalmamawrites #Reprobation

51PNGRbQiFL._SY346_

Book Synopsis:

Are you one of the elect?

Dr. Helen Hope is a lecturer in eschatology – the study of death, judgement, and the destiny of humankind. She is also a Calvinist nun, her life devoted to atoning for a secret crime.

When a body is found crucified on a Liverpool beach, she forms an unlikely alliance with suspect Mikko Kristensen, lead guitarist in death metal band Total Depravity. Together, they go on the trail of a rogue geneticist who they believe holds the key – not just to the murder, but to something much darker.

Also on the trail is cynical Scouse detective Darren Swift. In his first murder case, he must confront his own lack of faith as a series of horrific crimes drag the city of two cathedrals to the gates of hell.

Science meets religious belief in this gripping murder mystery.

Reprobation is available in ebook and paperback now.  The ebook is currently only £1.99 but you can purchase a copy of both here.

My Review:

Reprobation is a vivid, gruesome page turner that I enjoyed far more than I thought I would!

The two main characters of a nun and a death metal guitarist seems like a strange pairing but the author really makes it work as both characters are engaging ones that seemed believable.  I found I wanted to keep reading to find out where their investigation went.

The novel is set in Liverpool, the author’s home town, and her evident love for her city shines through with her beautiful, vivid descriptions of its famous locations.  I felt I could really imagine the locations and I would definitely like to visit Liverpool in the future go see them for myself.

There is a tense, almost threatening atmosphere throughout the book which helps to add to the tension and ensures the book is very gripping.  I found myself turning the pages faster as the story progresses as I desperately wanted to find out how the story ended.  The story has quite a few twists and turns which also ensured that I kept reading far to late.

This unbelievably is the author’s debut novel and I’m very excited to read her next book which I believe is already being written.

Huge thanks to Rachel from Rachel’s Random Resources for my copy of this book and for inviting me onto the blog tour.

#Blog tour: Lies Between Us by Ronnie Turner @Ronnie_Turner @HQDigitalUK #LiesBetweenUs

51ZJAzdewoL

Book Synopsis:

Will they ever learn the truth?

Three people, leading very different lives, are about to be brought together – with devastating consequences . . .

John has a perfect life, until the day his daughter goes missing.

Maisie cares for her patients, but hides her own traumatic past.

Miller should be an innocent child, but is obsessed with something he can’t have.

They all have something in common, though none of them know it – and the truth won’t stay hidden for long . . .

A gripping psychological thriller for fans of Clare Mackintosh, Shari Lapena and Lisa Jewell.

Lies Between us is available in ebook now for the amazing price of 99p.  It will be published in paperback on the 13th of December 2018.  You can purchase or pre-order your copy here.

My Review:

Lies Between Us is a well plotted, tense story that is hard to believe is a debut novel.

The story is told from three separate points of view which helps to add to the tension and intrigue in the story.  All the characters are connected in some way but how they are connected isn’t revealed until the end after some clever twists.

I initially felt sympathy towards all of the characters in the book, but as the story progresses and I learnt more about them my opinions changed.  Its obvious from the start that Miller is an unusual child but I couldn’t help feeling a bit sorry for him and his feelings that he wasn’t included in family life properly.  I also felt sympathy towards John as his grief and sadness at losing  his daughter almost radiated from the page which was heartbreaking to read about.

The tension in the book is gradually increased as the story progresses and the characters true selves are revealed.  I found the book quite hard to put down at times as there was always something happening.  Just when I thought I’d figured out what had happened and what the characters connection was, something would happen that sent the story in a completely different direction.  I’m normally able to work out the ending of abook but this one took me by surprise which I thought was wonderfully done by the author.

As mentioned above this is the debut novel by Ronnie Turner and I look forward to reading more from her in the future.  If you like character driven, tension filled psychological thrillers then you’ll love this book.

#BlogTour: The Year That Changed Everything by Cathy Kelly @cathykellybooks @PoppyStimpson @orionbooks #TheYearThatChangedEverything

51+hsvuKgoL

Book Synopsis:

‘Warm, witty and wise’ Marian Keyes

Three women, three birthdays, one year that will change everything…

Ginger isn’t spending her thirtieth the way she would have planned. Tonight might be the first night of the rest of her life – or a total disaster.

Sam is finally pregnant after years of trying. When her waters break on the morning of her fortieth birthday, she panics: forget labour, how is she going to be a mother?

Callie is celebrating her fiftieth at a big party in her Dublin home. Then a knock at the door mid-party changes everything…

The Year That Changed Everything is available in all formats now! You can purchase your copy here.

My Review:

I’m a huge fan of Cathy Kelly so you can imagine my delight at being invited onto the blog tour for her latest books.

The Year That Changed Everything is a very interesting, warm and funny book about three very different women who happen to celebrate their birthdays on the same day and trying to deal with what life has thrown at them.

Firstly I loved Cathy’s writing style which just invites you into the story and makes you feel that you know the women intimately.  I enjoyed visiting each of their worlds and slowly getting to know about them.  The problems they face are all very real problems which I imagine many people face and I found it fascinating to try to sort through them along with the characters.

Out of all the characters my favourite was Sam as I felt I really related to her problem as I remember the worries about being a mother.  Her part of the story helped provide some of the most touching moments of the book and I found myself wishing I did know her so I could help her through her anxiety.  I also felt for Callie dealing with her difficult teenage daughter.  I’m dreading the teen years with my kids, especially as my three year old already has a lot of attitude! I felt that I could really emphasise with her and what she was going through as it’s difficult to try and get through to kids at the best of times.

This book isn’t particularly fast paced, rather the author gives the reader time to really get to know the characters and their world.  This makes you feel very connected to the characters and involved with them so that you care what happens to them.  I found myself utterly immersed in the book, looking up after what seemed like minutes to find hours had past.

I’ve read most of Cathy’s books and can’t wait to read more from her in the future.

Huge thanks to Poppy Stimpson from Orion for inviting me onto the blog tour and for my copy of this book.

With the men away fighting for King and Country and the ever-present dangers of the German Luftwaffe’s nightly reign of death and destruction, the family must do all they can to keep a stiff upper lip.

And will Jo find the love and security she seeks in a time of such grave peril?

A Ration Book Christmas is available in ebook and paperback now.  The ebook is currently only £1.99 but you can purchase a copy of both here.

My Review:

I love a war time saga, especially now the nights are drawing in they are perfect for snuggling up to read.

I was immediately transported to the east end in war time and felt that I was there with them experiencing everything alongside the characters.  The fantastic historical details really made the era come to life and I feel I could imagine the scenes very well in my mind.  The wonderful descriptions of the community spirit of the East End was lovely to read about and I found myself wishing I lived in that era so I could be involved.

I loved Jo and thought she was a fantastic main character.  She’s definitely a strong, determined woman whose more than capable of standing up for herself and her brother which made me really warm to her.  Her work with the ambulance service was very interesting to read about and made me realise how brave the people were who volunteered to help on them.  I also loved Jo’s grannie, Queenie as I thought her ideas about what she’d do to the enemy if they invaded was hilarious and had had me laughing aloud.

This is a great book to relax and lose yourself in.  There is always something happening in the book which makes it a very easy read as you want to continue reading to find out what’s going to happen next.

This is the first book by this author I have read and I look forward to reading more from her in the future.

Huge thanks to Rachel from Rachel’s Random Resources for inviting me onto the blog tour and for my copy of this book.  If you like family sagas set in WW2 with some fabulous, unforgettable characters then you’ll love this book.

I was born into a large, East End family and grew up in the overcrowded streets clustered around the Tower of London. The Fullerton family have lived by London docks since the 1830s and all my books are set in and around this area.

East London has changed greatly and many of the old neighbourhoods I knew as a child have changed too, but I endeavour to bring them alive again in my East London stories of love, family and hard times. I feel that it is my background that gives my stories their distinctive authenticity.

I has been shortlisted for and won several awards and regularly undertake writing workshop. I’m fortunate enough to be a guest cruise lecturer and have sailed all around the world talking about East London’s vibrant history. I am married to a minister in the Church of England and have three grown-up daughters.

Book Synopsis:

The light fades as she runs for her life, the forest now becoming quieter around her. The only noise she hears is the sound of footsteps following her…

It’s hiking season in Black Rock Falls and the small town in Montana is flooded with visitors. But when a hiker finds a human skull on a deserted trail in the woods that surround the town, Detective Jenna Alton is called in to investigate.

With no missing persons reported, Jenna has no leads. Then her team makes a shocking discovery – the body of another hiker, a young man, tied to a tree and riddled with bullets. Could the two murders be linked?

As more bodies are found, Jenna and her deputy David Kane know that they must venture deep into the forest to find and face the killer. But nothing can prepare them for what awaits them there…

The Crying Season is available in ebook and paperback now.  The ebook is currently only £1.99 but you can purchase a copy of both here.

My Review:

Wow DK Hood has done it again with this brilliant, creepy and tension filled book.  From the opening, dramatic chapter I was hooked and I felt like I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough as I was desperate to find out what happens next.

The tension never really lets up in this book as there is a generally creepy feeling to it.  The idea of something lurking in the woods is a fear that never really leaves us from childhood and the author plays on this brilliantly.  The reader is aware quite early on that there is a serial killer on the loose that made me feel that something was going to happen or something jump out at any moment which definetly kept me on my toes!

Crime fiction involving serial killers are always my favourite as they are always do unpredictable and this book is no exception.  There are lots of twists and turns and the story ended up going in a completely different direction than I thought it was.  I had lots of ideas as to who the serial killer was but was proved wrong on many occasions which made for a very intriguing read.  I love a book that does this and keeps me guessing.

As with the other books in the series I really enjoyed the fantastic relationship that the two lead detectives share.  It is a relationship based on mutual affection and trust which was great to read about.  The banter and jokes between them helped break up the tension and lead to some of the funny moments in the book.

This is the fourth book in the series but I think it would be fine as a standalone as anything you need to know is explained.  Each story is individual in its own way which makes it easy to start with any of the books in the series.

Huge thanks to Noelle from Bookouture for my copy of this book and for inviting me onto the blog tour.  If you like creepy, fast paced crime novels then you’ll love this book.  Just make sure you’ve got a clear schedule as you won’t be able to put it down!

Top 100 Amazon Bestselling Author.
I’ve always had a wicked sense of humor, and was the kid who told the ghost stories around the campfire. Writing crime thrillers for Bookouture is a dream come true for me. I really love writing the Kane and Alton Series. The success of Don’t Tell a Soul reaching 32 in the Top 100 Bestseller list on Amazon in the USA, 8 in Canada and 7 in Australia plus three genre bestsellers lists followed by Bring Me Flowers enjoying the same success, spurred me on to write more thrilling novels. Follow Me Home came next and The Crying Season is due for release in October 2018. There will be two more books in the series to come at least. My readers are wonderful people and have been my inspiration to keep going.
Why set the series in Montana?
I have spent wonderful vacations in many countries. I love the rugged beauty of Montana and can’t wait to return. I use the memories from my travels to enhance my stories.
My interest in the development of forensic science to solve crime goes back many years. It was one subject I enjoyed studying and with the constant advances, it never gets boring.
With many stories, waiting for me to write I’ll look forward to sharing many more exciting crime thrillers with you.
