Book Synopsis:

A man with dark thoughts on his mind is racing along the remote snowy roads of Hurmevaara in Finland, when there is flash in the sky and something crashes into the car. That something turns about to be a highly valuable meteorite. With euro signs lighting up the eyes of the locals, the unexpected treasure is temporarily placed in a neighbourhood museum, under the watchful eye of a priest named Joel.
But Joel has a lot more on his mind than simply protecting the riches that have apparently rained down from heaven. His wife has just revealed that she is pregnant. Unfortunately Joel has strong reason to think the baby isn’t his. As Joel tries to fend off repeated and bungled attempts to steal the meteorite, he must also come to terms with his own situation, and discover who the father of the baby really is.

Transporting the reader to the culture, landscape and mores of northern Finland Little Siberia is both a crime novel and a hilarious, blacker-than-black comedy about faith and disbelief, love and death, and what to do when bolts from the blue – both literal and figurative – turn your life upside down.

My Review:

Little Siberia is another fantastic read from one of my favourite authors. It’s going to be a hard book to review as I don’t want to give anything away and ruin it for anyone.

One of the things I love about this author is his ability to write funny, original books which are highly entertaining. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book about a meteorite landing through a car roof and an ex army priest trying to discover who his wife has cheated with but that’s exactly what happens in this book!

Joel was an interesting main character who I felt a lot of sympathy for. He’s definitely got a lot on his plate as he struggles with his faith, tries to discover who his wife was unfaithful with and fend off multiple attempts to steal the meteorite! There aren’t many people to choose from in his small village which makes Joel more and more obsessed with discovering who it is. The snow and size of the village help to provide a claustrophobic atmosphere which had me suspecting everyone.

This is quite a dark story at times with some violent scenes which might not be to everyone’s taste. However the unlikeness of the story and the sarcastic humour the author includes dilutes this, making it a fantastic read. The ending was brilliantly done and I was actually quite sad when the book ended as I had so enjoyed it.

Huge thanks to Anne Cater for inviting me onto the blog tour and to Orenda Books for my copy of this book. If you haven’t read anything by this author I highly recommend you do as soon as possible.
