Book Synopsis:

In the midst of war, he found love
In the midst of darkness, he found courage
In the midst of tragedy, he found hope

The Beekeeper of Aleppo

What will you find from his story?

Nuri is a beekeeper; his wife, Afra, an artist. They live a simple life, rich in family and friends, in the beautiful Syrian city of Aleppo – until the unthinkable happens. When all they care for is destroyed by war, they are forced to escape.

As Nuri and Afra travel through a broken world, they must confront not only the pain of their own unspeakable loss, but dangers that would overwhelm the bravest of souls. Above all – and perhaps this is the hardest thing they face – they must journey to find each other again.

Moving, powerful, compassionate and beautifully written, The Beekeeper of Aleppo is a testament to the triumph of the human spirit. Told with deceptive simplicity, it is the kind of book that reminds us of the power of storytelling.

My Review:

This is such a beautiful, moving and important book which I think everyone should read. It’s a book that has deeply affected me and will stay with me for a long time.

The story switches from the present day to the characters lives in Syria. Firstly I have to admit to not knowing much about life in Syria before the war broke out and it was very poignant, though interesting to see how great it was. I knew a little about the horrors that occured in Syria but I think most of it has been kept out of the media, so it was shocking to learn about the awful things that happen. The author does this in a clever way as she lets the reader understand how horrendous life was but without going into too much detail as to upset the reader and stop them reading. The stories that are told in this book are ones that will stick with me forever.

Although an emotional and, at times, heart breaking story it also managed to be a beautiful story full of hope and love. The lovely relationships that Nuri has between all of his friends was great to read about and stops the story becoming too bogged down in sadness. The fact that this book is based on real stories makes it deeply affecting and thought provoking, particularly about how refugees are treated. This would make a great book club read as there atlots of things to discuss and I’m not surprised that it’s been included in Richard & Judy’s bookclub selection.

Huge thanks to Tracy Fenton for inviting me onto the blog tour and to Zaffre for my copy of this book.
