My Review:
The Housemate was a very intriguing audio book which was great at distracting me whilst I did the housework. This was my first audiobook experience and I’ll definitely be trying more in the future – especially as I’ve discovered Alexa can read them out for you. I liked being able to multitask and the narrator had a very pleasant tone which made the book easy to listen to.
The chapters are divided into now and then with the text broken up by Instagram posts from Instagram influencer Mrs Clean. I was a bit sceptical whether this would work on an audio book but it really does. I liked this and felt that it gave the book a modern feel. It also got me thinking about the dangers of social media and how easy it is to get obsessed with following famous people on there. The book also shines a light on mental health, in particular OCD. It was interesting to find out more about the condition and how it affects people.
Remy was a very complex character who I enjoyed following throughout the book. Her relationship with her housemates was fascinating to explore and I liked learning a little about their past. I wasn’t overly sure I trusted Remy and found myself doubting some of what she said. Her obsession with Mrs Clean was uncomfortable to read about at times because it seemed so realistic and I often found myself cringing at some of the passages.
Overall I really enjoyed this book and would definitely like to listen to more audio books from this author, and narrator, in the future. The pace slowly increases until I found myself hovering over my Alexa, hanging onto every word as I wanted to know what was going to happen next. The ending, although slightly abrupt, was unexpected and I thought it was a great way to end the book.
Huge thanks to Rachel from Rachel’s Random Resources for inviting me onto the blog tour and to Boldwood books for my copy of this audio book.
