#BlogTour: Under One Roof by Samantha Tonge @SamTongeWriter @BoldwoodBooks @rararesources #UnderOneRoof #SamanthaTonge

Book Synopsis:

One forgotten discovery will change three women’s lives for ever…

Robin hasn’t been home for decades. After running away to London, she never expected to see her cantankerous mother, Faye, again. But when Faye has a fall, the two women are thrown together once more.

The years apart have not made their hearts grow fonder and the ground between them is unsteady. Then Robin finds an unopened scroll – the last of the treasure hunts her much-missed father used to take them on every Sunday. A hunt he believed might change everything.

Yet, not even this gift from her beloved father can smooth the way until Robin’s daughter, Amber, arrives to meet her grandmother for the first time. Amber is determined that the decades-old mystery be solved.

Can a 30-year-old treasure hunt really ‘change everything’?

My Review:

Under One Roof is a heart warming page turner that made me laugh one moment then cry the next.

One of the things that really stands out about this author is the way she can write about complex family relationships so well. I really felt that I was actually there in the house with the three of them at times and therefore felt very involved in all that happens. It was fascinating following the three women as they try to live together and try to work through everything that’s happened in the past.

The three main characters were interesting creations that I enjoyed getting to know throughout the story. It took me a while to warm to them as none of them were particularly pleasant characters but I slowly did as I began to understand what each of them had been through.

Overall i really enjoyed this book which had a good pace to it. I had lots of theories about how this book was going to unfold but was proven wrong about most of it, with some of the twists taking me completely by surprise. I loved the nostalgic climpse into the 80’s this book gives the reader and I especially enjoyed the beautiful treasure hunt the three go on which was wonderful to read about.

Huge thanks to Rachel from Rachel’s Random Resources for my copy of this book and to Boldwood for my copy of this book via netgalley.

#BlogTour: Tapestry by Beth Duke @ZooloosBT #Tapestry #BethDuke

Book Synopsis:

Beth Duke, Author of #1 Best Seller It All Comes Back to You, delivers an emotional and inspiring novel about family, from the roots that ground us to the branches that allow us to take flight.

“Beth Duke is a poet disguised as a Southern novelist. Tapestry made me laugh, made me think and in the end, made me cry. Tapestry delivers on ALL counts.”
-Dan Brown, Author of Reunion

Twenty-one-year-old Skye Willis lives in Eufaula, Alabama, a tourist mecca of stately homes and world-class bass fishing. Her childhood friends are either stuck at dead ends or have moved on to accomplish Big Things.

Skye’s grandmother, Verna, insists on being called “Sparrow” because she suspects her ancestors were Muscogee Creek. She dresses in faux deerskin and experiments with ancient Native American recipes, offering a myth or legend to anyone who will listen.

Skye has no idea what to do with her life. She’s smart as hell, but she has no faith or knowledge there’s something out there she was “born to do.” Nor does she know much of anything about her father, who died in Afghanistan when she was a toddler. He and his family are a mystery her mother won’t discuss. But when Sparrow sets out to confirm her Creek ancestry through genetic testing, Skye joins in. The results hit like a DNA bomb, launching them both on a path filled with surprises and life-changing events. Skye learns a harder truth than she ever expected.

Alternating chapters between Skye’s Alabama life and an intertwining tale of greed, deceit, and control in Texas, this story offers proof that all life is a woven tapestry of past, present, and future.

In Beth Duke’s uplifting and soul-singing voice, TAPESTRY is Southern Fiction at its best; you will cry, you will laugh out loud, and you will wish you were a member of the beautiful, matriarchal family Duke has created for her readers.

My Review:

Tapestry is a beautiful, moving story that intrigued me from the start and I thought was a fantastic read. The story is told in two parts; one following Skye’s life with her mum and grandmother, the other follows The Darlings who company are trying to build a pipeline near Native American land but is being met with fierce resistance.

I absolutely loved Skye and enjoyed following her throughout the book. It was nice to meet a younger person who didn’t have everything mapped out in life but was still trying to work out which direction they wanted to go. Sparrow was another amazing character who’s passion and determination I really admired. She was a fantastically quirky character too which made it easy to warm to her. I loved learning more about the relationships between the three generations of woman and watching as they discovered more about themselves and their past.

There was a little bit of Native American history in this book which I found utterly fascinating as I didn’t know much about it. I eagerly drank in all the little details and spent too long on Google trying to find out more. This book has definitely helped spark my interest in learning more about their history.

Overall I really enjoyed this book which seemed to have a great pace to it. The story does start off a little slow maybe but soon gets going. Unusually I loved following both timelines equally and loved the different tone the author had created for both the timelines. One seeming more relaxed and character driven, while the Darling timeline seemed more rushed and frantic. It was interesting seeing the two come together and I was very sad when the book ended and I had to say goodbye to the wonderful characters.

Huge thanks to Zoe from Zooloo’s blog tours for my copy of this book and for inviting me onto the blog tour.

A New Dawn Over Mulberry Lane is available in ebook and paperback now. You can purchase your copy using the links below.

My Review:

A New Dawn Over Mulberry Lane is another fantastic addition to the Mulberry Lane series. I’ve been a huge fan of this series from the start and I am always amazed how the author keeps it so fresh and interesting.

Firstly it was great to be back in Mulberry Lane, catching up with all the families there. Things have moved on a little from the war years and it was very interesting to see how much things had changed there. In this book the reader gets to catch up with old favourites like Peggy and Able as well as seeing how the younger generation have grown up. I found this both fascinating and quite emotional as a few of the younger characters had now moved away and started families of their own. However I liked the way that the author manages to include them into the story, updating the reader as to what is happening with them. I felt this helped show the sense of family that the Mulberry Lane books are all about

This book drew me into the story quickly and there always seemed to be something happening to keep me reading. As you can probably expect life doesn’t go smoothly for the residents of Mulberry Lane and it was fascinating, though poignant to go on the journey with them. This book is part of a series and I definitely recommend reading then in order. It’s going to be exciting to see what happens next and I hope we don’t have to wait long for the next book in this fabulous series.

Huge thanks to Rachel from Rachel’s Random Resources for inviting me onto the blog tour and to Boldwood for my copy via Netgalley.

#Jojorecommends: The Nook by Michael Barnum @barnumichael #TheNook #MichaelBarnum #TwitchStreamer #SingerSongwriter #newmusic

Good evening everyone and welcome to another jojorecommends. Today I’m featuring The Nook by Michael Barnum.

Michael was one of the first music streamers I found on twitch, after a friend recommended him,and I quickly fell in love with his relaxed streams. He’s on in the mornings for me and his chilled music is a great way to wake up. He always sings Joanna from Sweeny Todd when he greets me in stream which never fails to make me smile.

Michael is an American Filipino singer living in California. The Nook, his first single in two years, is a beautiful love story that really took me on a journey with the couple. Michael’s lyrics are incredibly vivid and helped me picture the story he’s trying to tell in the song. I felt I could actually see The Nook, based on a real air B&B home, in my mind and made me want to search for it on the web. I love the striking end to the verse and how effective the word no in this context.

If you would like to follow him on social media or watch him on twitch please click on the links below.

How To Listen:

Michael’s music is available on all streaming platforms as linked below. I’ve linked the YouTube video and one of my favourite covers by Michael below.

Oh wow this was such a beautiful, emotional and poignant book which will definitely be staying with me for a long time. As a parent myself I think it’s had a profound affect on me as I felt I could really emphasize with the characters and could easy imagine myself in that situation.

I quickly found myself drawn into the story and into the lives of the characters. The author has a beautiful way of writting so that the reader feels like they are actually there watching everything unfold. The characters seemed very realistic, almost like old friends which meant I felt very involved in the story and felt every twist keenly.

The story unfolds at a great pace and I felt there was always something happening to keep my interest. I quickly found I couldn’t out it down as I desperately wanted to find out what would happen next though also not completely sure I wanted to find out. She has a plan…
But the only woman who’s caught his eye is sophisticated beauty Octavia Marshall, one of the notorious ladies of Carson Street. They strike a deal that promises them both what they desire the most, but William’s a fool if he thinks Octavia will be a conventional married woman, and she’s very much mistaken if she thinks the lives they once led won’t follow them wherever they go.

A Very Modern Marriage is available in ebook and paperback now. You can purchase your copy using the links below.

My Review:

I’m a huge fan of this author so I was very excited to be invited onto the blog tour for this her latest book.

The story follows William, once a boy from the slums who’s managed to work himself up to be a respectable business man in Victorian society. To complete this image of respectability he wants a wife and has set his sights on Octavia, a local beauty. Octavia has a bit of a shady past but also wants to improve herself and learn more about business. She agrees to be Williams wife in return for for him teaching her about business, but things don’t go according to plan.

I really liked the main characters William and Octavia who haven’t had the best start in life but their determination to improve themselves has dragged them out of poverty. Their journey was wonderful to read about and very inspiring, especially Octavia who also had society’s prejudice against females to deal with. The banter between the two of them was brilliant and the air seemed to sizzle between them from the start.

Overall I loved this story and soon felt absorbed into the character’s world. The story seemed to move at a good pace and when it was a bit slower I found I didn’t care as I was just enjoying hanging out with the characters. The relationships in the book were fascinating to explore and I enjoyed learning more about them. The ladies of Carson Street were especially great to follow through the book and I enjoyed observing the closeness between them. I was a bit disappointed that they weren’t more supportive of Octavia and her dreams to make more of herself though. The ending was brilliant and it was great to see how far each of the characters had come, despite the many curve balls that had been thrown at them.

Huge thanks to Rachel from Rachel’s Random Resources for inviting me onto the blog tour and to Aria for my copy of this book via netgalley.

Sorry Isn’t Good Enough is available in ebook and hardback now. You can purchase your copy using the links below.

My Review:

Sorry Isn’t Good Enough is a gripping, fast paced book that somehow manages to be sad and uplifting.

The story is told in two timelines one following Stephanie as a child growing up in the 1960’s with a very religious father and a mother who is very cold towards her and just follows what her father says. The other follows Stephanie in 1997 as she deals with a stalker and the fear that her past might have come back to haunt her. Out of the two I did prefer the earlier time line as it was fascinating following Stephanie and learning more about her life. I thought it was very clever how it was told from a 9 years olds perspective as the author manages to show events from the beautiful innocent of a child. I felt quite sympathetic towards Stephanie from the beginning and and just wanted to reach into the book to give her a hug as I felt she needed one. I also wished I could have a word with her parents and her supposed best friend who always seemed to be putting her down.

The story was very addictive and I soon found myself thoroughly engrossed in the story. There were some sad moments but also some uplifting ones too. The conversations between Stephanie and her supposed best friend Dawn made me laugh out loud at times as it was amusing to see how they’d misinterpreted the adults comments. The story has lots of twists and turns which kept me guessing as to what was going to happen next which I always enjoy.

Huge thanks to Tracy Fenton for inviting me onto the blog tour and to Orion for my copy of this book.

A triumphant mid-life coming-of-age story about bridging the gap between who we are and who we feel we ought to be.

Sugar and Snails is available in all formats now. You can purchase your copy using the links below.

My Review:

This is a powerful, poignant book that was beautifully written. Throughout the book we follow Diana who is second guessing a big decision she made at the tender age of 15 and the impact it’s had on her life. Through the author’s beautiful but powerful narrative the reader finds out about Diana’s childhood, in a series of flashbacks, and what her life is like now.

I thought Diana’s parents were brilliant characters who were excellently portrayed. I started off not liking them as they seemed quite unsympathetic but as the book continued I realised what a hard decision they had to make and that they were actually just scared. As a parent myself their situation was one I found myself thinking about when I wasn’t reading and wondering to myself what I would have done.

The author is a psychologist and there is a lot of psychology in the book which I found really fascinating. The author has written these sections really well so I feel that anyone could understand what she was saying. I thought it was interesting to get this background information and that it helped add a lot to the story.

Overall I really enjoyed this book! The author has taken a controversial, modern subject and written about it very sympathetically giving the reader both sides to the story so they are encouraged to make up their own minds about things. It was surprisingly gripping and I quickly found myself caring for the characters , wanting to keep reading as I wanted to find out how it would end.

Huge thanks to Anne for inviting me onto the blog tour and for my copy of this book.
