Book Synopsis:

The BRAND NEW historical saga from AnneMarie Brear

A broken heart, a shameful secret…

Wakefield, Yorkshire 1871

Loretta Chambers has spent her life working at her father’s boatyard down at the docks. She’s tried hard to keep the business afloat, but with the railways taking trade away every day, Lorrie fears for the worst.

The arrival of handsome Italian, Matteo Falcone brings a brief glimmer of hope and a yearning inside Lorrie for another life, away from the filthy grime of the dockside. But despite her feelings for Matteo, she could never travel to Italy with him, and leave her father alone.

But one reckless, impetuous moment leaves Lorrie with a secret she will struggle to hide. And when tragedy strikes at the boatyard, Lorrie is left feeling more alone than ever before.

Always a dutiful daughter, Lorrie now carries a shame that could ruin her life forever…

My Review:

The Dock Girl’s Shame was a fast paced, engrossing read that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Firstly the author does a great job of setting the scene so that I felt completely transported back in time to the docks watching everyone as they work. I found it very interesting to learn more about what working on the docks entailed and the issues the workers face. The book is set at an interesting period in history when the railways were starting to take some of the work from the docks. I enjoyed learning more about this time and seeing how the docks had to adapt.

The main characters were fantastic creations who I enjoyed following throughout the book. The story focuses on Loretta who is the daughter of the Dock owner. I loved how strong and determination she was, working alongside the workers to get jobs completed. Her best friends Meg and Floss were also fun to read about with some of my favourite scenes being when they were all hanging out together. There were also some awful characters who I loved to hate and hoped would get their just deserts.

Overall I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read more in the future. The book had a great pace to it and there always seemed to be something happening to keep me reading. Even in the quieter moments I was just enjoying hanging out with the characters. I actually didn’t realise this was the second book in the series so I’ll definitely be going back to read the first book soon.

Huge thanks to Rachel from Rachel’s Random Resources for inviting me onto the blog tour and to Boldwood for my copy of this book.
