My Review:

This was another intense and engrossing read from one of my favourite authors. Once again I found myself quickly drawn into the story and the situation that the characters find themselves. I’ve thankfully never been in a hostage situation but the scenes that the author describes seemed very realistic, so I often felt like I was living and feeling everything alongside the characters which was very effective.

The characters are all very believable and beautifully written. I enjoyed getting to know them slowly as we learn more about their background and personality. The author shows a lot of understanding about human behaviour and it was interesting to see the different ways the characters dealt with their situation. There are some dark thoughts but also some heartwarming ones which made the situation seem very plausible. It also made the situation very gripping as I was unsure how everyone was going to react and what they would do next.

Overall I found this a tense, gripping read which I thoroughly enjoyed. I found I both wanted to keep reading to find out what happens but also to stop and savour the story as it was so good. This was a great study of human behaviour both the bad and the good with some of the compassion on display making me very emotional at times. Highly recommended!

Huge thanks to Anne Cater for inviting me onto the blog tour and to Allen & Unwin for my copy of this book.
